Shooting the Witness, Exhibition of cartoons by the late Naji Al-Ali

London Exhibition: Shooting the Witness: The cartoons of Naji Al-Ali

ShootingtheWitness.jpg

6 March – 12 April 2008

Shooting the Witness is an exhibition by the Palestinian cartoonist Naji Al-Ali, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his assassination in London.

Naji Al-Ali was one of the most prominent cartoonists in the Arab world. Sarcastic, poignant and perhaps too bold, El Ali's cartoons were drawn from his experience as a Palestinian refugee since childhood and clearly reflected his political stance. Naji Al-Ali had no political affiliations and the absence of slogans and dogma in his work brought both success and criticism. His bold and illustrative cartoons, widely published over the past 20-30 years, reveal the tragic state of the Middle East. The artist combined art and political satire like none other; his work sadly still rings true today.

His cartoons portrayed the bitter struggle and plight of the Palestinian people against Israeli oppression. He also campaigned against the absence of democracy, widespread corruption, and gross inequality in the Arab world. He was said to have antagonized virtually everyone in the Middle East. During his lifetime, he was said to have drawn around 40,000 drawings, on average two cartoons a day. He worked for various publications in the Arab world. Naji Al-Ali draws a critique of all sides in the conflict, and the world's complicity in the prolonged occupation of the Palestinians.

For the first time in London, sixty of Naji Al-Ali’s original artwork will be exhibited in Political Cartoon Gallery located in central London, the world’s only centre dedicated to Political Cartoons and Caricature. The gallery is organising the exhibition in cooperation with the SOAS Palestine Society, the Nakba60 group, Cartoon County and the family of Naji Al-Ali.

The Political Cartoon Gallery, 32 Store Street, London WC1E 7BS, is open Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm and on Saturdays between 11.30am – 5.30pm. Phone Dr Tim Benson on 020 7580 1114 for further details or images email him at info@politicalcartoon.co.uk

Retrospective Exhibition of Cartoons and Paintings by Colin Earl - 31 Oct. 23 Nov.

LONDON - Bromley, sees a major retrospective exhibition of cartoons, drawing and painting by one of Britain's foremost cartoonists, Colin Earl, whose work spans over 50 years.  The exhibition is at The Ripley Arts Centre, Sundridge  Avenue from 31st October to the 23rd November.  A special preview evening is being held on Tuesday 30th October – 7pm - 9pm to which all are welcome.

 GolfTreeCol.1.jpg           Clovelley.1s.jpg

Colin has won both national and international acclaim for the way he combines his passion for painting with his love of cartoons, which makes for very interesting viewing. He arrived in London in 1953 and proceeded to break into the national newspapers and leading magazines. By 1970 his work was appearing all over the world, America, South Africa, Australia, the Middle East  to name but a few. In 1995 after major spinal surgery he decided to take it a little easier and started painting. Colin also gives help and advice to aspiring cartoonists worldwide, here at Cartoon World. His regular Internet sessions are full of fun, enthusiasm and inspiration.

This stunning exhibition shows how cleverly he has combined his love of cartooning with his love of painting.

eins Entwicklungspolitik magazine's second cartoon competition

Dear cartoonist

The German magazine on development issues „eins Entwicklungspolitik" is organising its second global cartoon contest.

The image of Africa, as portrayed by experts, has undergone a recent change. In connection with the G8 summit at Heiligendamm, a new „Africa on the rise" has been praised. In Africa, an African Renaissance has been proclaimed for some time, which has inspired us to organise our second global cartoon contest on „Africa":

Africa: No Opportunities, Continent of Crises or Renaissance

The contest is being organised by "Zeitschrift eins Entwicklungspolitik" (magazine on development issues), and "Dritte Welt JournalistInnen Netz" (Third World Journalists’ Network), both in Frankfurt am Main/Germany.

Since it was launched in 1970, the German magazine "Entwicklungspolitik" has published a large number of cartoons, mainly by African, Asian and Latin American cartoonists. We have organised exhibitions and have given awards with the objective of stimulating discourse on global and North-South issues in German speaking countries. In 2005, we organised our first global cartoon contest, inviting cartoonists from all UN member states to participate. The contest followed up on previous competitions organised in 2000 and 2003 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 2005, the first review of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was on the international agenda, which motivated us to focus our global cartoon contest on the MDGs.

We would like to invite you to not only participate in this year’s contest yourself, but to also inform your colleagues of the contest. You may publish information on the contest in your websites, portals, newsletters and/or publications and pass them on to other cartoonists you know.

For further information on the contest and on the conditions of participation, please check out the contest website: www.entwicklungspolitk.org

In view of all the communication we expect following this global invitation, we would like to ask you to carefully read all the information attached, so as to avoid avoidable queries. For remaining questions, contact Juergen Weber at dwjn_jw@rediffmail.com

Please help us by communicating in English. Thank you very much for your kind cooperation!

Looking forward to your creative cartoons,

Yours faithfully,

Doug Marlette - Tribute by David D. Williams (President & CEO of TMS)

By now you've no doubt seen the news of the untimely death on Tuesday of Tribune Media Services cartoonist Doug Marlette in a car accident in Mississippi. At age 57, he was way too young to leave us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Melinda, and to their son, Jackson.

Among the many things we'll remember about Doug are his vibrant intellect, his world-class work ethic and the joy with which he led his private and professional lives.

He was a sophisticated political thinker who could have lectured on national and world affairs at any university in the country. The four editorial cartoons he produced each week were as insightful as the work of any top-notch syndicated columnist. His drawings delivered a bite, but he was never cruel. Doug delighted in making his points while bringing smiles to the faces of his readers.

In addition to his poltical cartoons, he produced a widely syndicated daily comic strip -- Kudzu -- http://comicspage.com/kudzu/index.html -- and he also enjoyed success as a novelist. He was in demand on the lecture circuit, and made many appearances on college campuses across the country, where he challenged young journalists to make the world a better place.

We're proud to have served as Doug's syndicate. He will be missed.

An Animator’s Grand Salute to Woody Woodpecker! Guess Who!

WoodySq.jpg

On July 11, StoryMakers Studio brings several of the biggest names in the cartoon world to the Grauman’s Chinese Theatres Complex in Hollywood: celebrated film critic and cartoon buff Leonard Maltin, six-time Emmy® Award winning cartoon producer Phil Roman, and voice actors June Foray (“Woody Woodpecker,” “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” Disney’s “Mulan”), Maurice LaMarche (“Futurama, “Animaniacs,” “Pinky and the Brain”) and Billy West (“The New Woody Woodpecker Show,” “Ren & Stimpy,” “Futurama”).

“We wouldn’t be surprised if these voice artists spent part of the evening talking as the characters they’re so well known for,” said Ronn Campbell, StoryMakers Studio’s executive producer.

“Here’s the best thing.  You can enjoy this event whether you’re in Los Angeles or NOT,” Campbell adds.  “In fact, we already have people from Europe and Asia reserving their viewing passes at http://www.StoryMakersStudio.com/woodywoodpecker”

In addition, everyone who signs up to watch the Woody Woodpecker event has a choice of eBooks that are of interest to anyone who currently works in animation; wants to work in animation; or is simply an animation fan.

“When the word got out that we were doing this event, animation professionals and fans from all over the world started contacting us, asking for a way they could enjoy our Woody Woodpecker event,” said series host and confessed cartoon fan Gordon Meyer. “We’re delighted that we can make this available to them.”

Details of the event including how cartoon fans can enjoy StoryMakers Studio’s Salute to Woody Woodpecker and Walter Lantz, can be found at:

The Political Cartoon Gallery

Blair’s Legacy: The Iraq War in cartoons - 6 July – 1 September 2007

Two thirds of the British public believe that Iraq will prove to be Tony Blair's most enduring legacy.  Four years after the US-led invasion, Iraq still dwarfs all other issues concerning Blair’s ten years in Downing Street. The exhibition consists of 60 cartoons by Britain’s leading cartoonists such as Steve Bell, Peter Brookes, Martin Rowson, Dave Brown, Peter Schrank, Paul Thomas and Morten Morland amongst many others.

The exhibition will be opened by George Galloway MP on Friday 6 July 2007

The Political Cartoon Gallery, 32 Store Street, London WC1E 7BS, is open Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm and on Saturdays between 11.30am – 5.30pm. Phone Dr Tim Benson on 020 7580 1114 for further details or images email him at info@politicalcartoon.co.uk
