Compalcomics Autumn 2008 Auction is now open!

Bids will be accepted until Tuesday September 2 at 8 PM UK time.To go directly to the main page for the catalogue, click here: http://www.compalcomics.com/catalogue/index.htm
There are 358 lots in our latest catalogue. The star of this auction is a Fine copy of The Dandy Book No 1, amongst the highest graded ever offered by us for sale. Continuing our Beano & Dandy war years collection we feature 1942 -1945 along with Dandy complete years of 1946 and 1947 at lots 79 and 80. Earlier decades are well represented in our bound volume collection where Sexton Blake and Union Jack titles have found recent heavy bidding. Film Fun, Radio Fun, Hotspur, Skipper and Wizard abound but the girls are not left out with The Schoolgirl and Schoolgirls' Own having several complete years on offer.
The Sixties are also stronger; TV 21, WHAM!, POW! (Spider-Matic Pistol at the ready), FANTASTIC, IT'S TERRIFIC are all here, some in complete runs, but Lady Penelope is set to overtake them all with a Rolls-Royce run on the outside. There may need to be an Olympian effort by The Broons, their 1960 Book in rare Very Fine Grade eagerly awaitin' the starter's gun. The Seventies look good with high grade No 1s of 2000AD, Misty and Spellbound, each with their free gifts intact. Original artwork from the same decade heralds a Christmas Faceache by Ken Reid, Clever Dick by Leo Baxendale and Frankie Stein by Robert Nixon - but watch out for the Toad-Creatures, they've invaded our back cover in Journey To The Stars by Ron Turner.
Our US section promotes a cents copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1, Avengers #1 and Silver Surfer's classic issue 4, CGC'd at 9.4. There's a House Of Secrets #92 CGC'd at 9.2 and Iron Fist #14 [nm] which join 70s and 80s runs of Avengers, Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, Batman and Detective comics.
Compalcomics holds four auctions a year. Become a member of this list and you will receive a message shortly before auctions open and close. Results of most auctions are posted online two weeks after the closing date.
Important Note: If you have a question about any of the items in the catalogue, please send an email to Compalcomics director Malcolm Phillips at this address: comicbook@compalcomics.com

Bids will be accepted until Tuesday 3 June at 8 PM UK time.

There are 311 lots in this catalogue. The Broons are the stars of this auction with their No. 1 Book from 1940 and the relatively high grade of Fine- will warrant serious consideration at lot 52. Several early 40s Xmas issues of Beano and Dandy are also offered and there are many complete years from the Sixties to the Eighties as well and these can be safely considered for the future as grades are high. From this same era are full runs of Lion, SMASH! and WHAM! along with every 1950s Girl comic, where lot 131 includes the free gift Girl Sun-Visor in yellow - this summer's must-have accessory. (Although I'll probably stick to a Bud-Visor).
Sexton Blake leads our bound volume collection along with a strong run of Union Jack also showcasing his detective stories. Highlighted other titles are The Thriller, Schoolgirls' Own, Champion, Triumph, Ranger, Radio and Film Fun. There's also a key Gem Library half-year volume from 1939 containing the rare Biggles South Sea Adventure story in 10 complete episodes. It's at lot 22.
Our artwork sales multiply and along with headliners Desperate Dan and Oor Wullie ('A ken whit we'll dae, Bob, we'll evacuate oorsels') there are The Daleks, Lord Snooty, Tommy Cooper, Dan Dare, The Galloping Glory Boys, Rupert, Frankie Stein, Clever Dick, The Spider and Don Lawrence's rare front cover board for The Trigan Empire.
Our US section reflects the recent blockbuster Iron Man movie with Tales Of Suspense 39 and, of course, issue 1. Spider-Man features a Very Fine #3 and CGCs of 28 and 129. There are high grade Golden Age Detective, Flash, Sensation and Superboy titles and we also concentrate on the 70s with The Avengers, Captain America, X-Men and Green Lantern.

Shooting the Witness, Exhibition of cartoons by the late Naji Al-Ali

London Exhibition: Shooting the Witness: The cartoons of Naji Al-Ali

6 March – 12 April 2008
Shooting the Witness is an exhibition by the Palestinian cartoonist Naji Al-Ali, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his assassination in London.
Naji Al-Ali was one of the most prominent cartoonists in the Arab world. Sarcastic, poignant and perhaps too bold, El Ali's cartoons were drawn from his experience as a Palestinian refugee since childhood and clearly reflected his political stance. Naji Al-Ali had no political affiliations and the absence of slogans and dogma in his work brought both success and criticism. His bold and illustrative cartoons, widely published over the past 20-30 years, reveal the tragic state of the Middle East. The artist combined art and political satire like none other; his work sadly still rings true today.
His cartoons portrayed the bitter struggle and plight of the Palestinian people against Israeli oppression. He also campaigned against the absence of democracy, widespread corruption, and gross inequality in the Arab world. He was said to have antagonized virtually everyone in the Middle East. During his lifetime, he was said to have drawn around 40,000 drawings, on average two cartoons a day. He worked for various publications in the Arab world. Naji Al-Ali draws a critique of all sides in the conflict, and the world's complicity in the prolonged occupation of the Palestinians.
For the first time in London, sixty of Naji Al-Ali’s original artwork will be exhibited in Political Cartoon Gallery located in central London, the world’s only centre dedicated to Political Cartoons and Caricature. The gallery is organising the exhibition in cooperation with the SOAS Palestine Society, the Nakba60 group, Cartoon County and the family of Naji Al-Ali.
The Political Cartoon Gallery, 32 Store Street, London WC1E 7BS, is open Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm and on Saturdays between 11.30am – 5.30pm. Phone Dr Tim Benson on 020 7580 1114 for further details or images email him at info@politicalcartoon.co.uk
