By Jenifer Jurden

Born 1958 in Wilmington, Delaware, Jenifer Jurden was raised in a cartooning household where making others laugh was top priority.  She credits her father Jack Jurden, a longtime syndicated editorial cartoonist, for her abilities to infuse a unique outlook on seemingly simple everyday life.  Drawing before she could even walk, Jenifer learned to communicate volumes in a single frame.

For over 26 years Jurden provided Jurdy toons to her colleagues at a Fortune 100 international corporation where, as an executive leader, she inspired colleagues with her comical coping mechanism and other - worldly character, Jurdy. Now Jurdy entertains thousands through Jurden’s ability to provide gut - wrenching comic relief to life’s mundane frustrations and  challenges with her Jurdy & Jurdy Green single panel cartoons.

Line art with computer generated colour
POA

By Neil Stewart

One day at the tender age of 10 years old (primary five), I felt an irrepressible urge to draw a cartoon entitled 'three frame adventures present "Canoe!" '. Each frame showed a stick man in a canoe alternately dipping his paddle on each side of the canoe with no apparent punchline. I showed this to my friend, who was sitting next to me, and was a bit startled when he cracked up and asked if he could keep it. It wasn't the joke, for there was none, it was the daft way it was drawn that did it. From that moment I was completely hooked.

I've been a qualified architect since 1988, and working as a one-man practice in the Scottish Highlands since 1995, while no-one remembers my buildings they do seem to remember my cartoons. Published cartoons include illustrations for school magazine, student newsletters, company handbooks, and several illustrated children's books. Unpublished cartoons cover a wide range of topics, some prompted by events and the rest just coming out of nowhere.

My preferred method of working is hand-drawing on paper, scanning and colouring on computer. My cartoon style is 'wobbly line'.  A lot of my cartoons are about things that relate to the building industry but I'm happy doing cartoons about anything at all, as long as they're funny. Closest to my heart is the three frame adventure - that's where it all began, and the jokes have gone steadily sideways from there......

By Chris Gill

My cartoons result from the confluence of two natural resources: the ravaging advancement of years and the compulsion to stay young. What better way to stay young than to observe and draw the absurdity of the world as it is - it sure beats writing about the world as it ought to be! I am trained academically in philosophy and self taught in art. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.

By Colin Earl

GolfTreeCol.2s.jpg    FishingColour.1s.jpg

From the age of 11 my one aim in life was to be a cartoonist, so when I was 14, I started calling on the Editor of the Express & Star ( my local paper) with a batch of cartoons every week. After a year he offered to take me on to the paper as an apprentice for 6 years to his resident cartoonist, and at 15 I had my first cartoon published in the Express & Star. At 21 I became a fully fledged cartoonist and started submitting cartoons to other publications and my first acceptance was from a small magazine called Razzle.  I took this as an omen and left the Express & Star and in 1953 arrived in London and found an agent. But it was tough at first and at one point I had to pawn almost everything I owned, even my overcoat in the middle of winter!

Then in 1954 the art editor of the Daily Herald offered me a regular cartoon spot on the paper and other magazines started to buy my work and by 1955 I was selling cartoons regularly to Everybodys, Answers, TitBits, John Bull, London Opinion, Men Only, Lilliput,Tatler, Reveille, Wide World and other national Daily & Sunday newspapers, often working solidly from 8 in the morning until 10 at night!

I'm still drawing cartoons and now painting watercolours and oils and doing portraits and I'm chairman of my local art group. But my first love will always be cartoons.

  • "LUNA" FROM STRANGE FLESH

    Watercolour, Gouache and mixed media
    Not for sale

    By Eric P. Schreurs
a haunting and disturbing image from "STRANGE FLESH" produced in 1998-99 by the self-taught Dutch artist, ERIC P. SCHREURS, who must be ranked amongst the world's most bizarre cartoonists. THIS FAMOUS DUTCH CARTOONIST has sold to date more than 1 million copies of his Klepzeiker series. Eric Schreurs belongs to a small group of Dutch and Belgian progressive cartoonists who rescued Dutch and Belgian comic strips from their somewhat corny trappings and made them appeal to a whole new generation, in the same way as pop music and cult films. When he first burst on the scene in Holland in the eighties, he caused a stir, upsetting the Dutch establishment with his explicit and disturbing cartoon art. A new exhibition of Eric Schreurs "FRESH STRANGE FLESH", was on at the Galerie Lambiek in Amsterdam and may then be transferred to their website which you can visit via their link on our Cartooning/Comics Links Page and on our Exhibitions/Galleries Links Page in the navigation bar at right.
